“An Unheard Farewell” is a side quest in the Valley of Ashes region of Valor Mortis. An anxious adjudant, sheltering in a tipped-over carriage, has lost track of his scouting party, which vanished into the caves nearby. He asks you to find his scouts and bring back their orders.
To complete the quest you need to make your way into the caves, defeat the Scout Commander, pick up the orders and return to the adjudant. Doing so rewards you with the Sleight of Hand Amber and the “Aggressive Reconnaissance” Trophy/Achievement.
This guide walks you through every step, from where to find the adjudant to whether you should tell him the truth about his scouts.
Starting the Quest
“An Unheard Farewell” can be started by talking to the NPC in the tipped carriage just before the "Demolished Path" Lantern in the Valley of Ashes region.
He will ask you to go and find his scouts, who have disappeared in the caves nearby.
Talk to him before you go into the caves. If you pick up the scouts' orders before accepting his quest there is currently a bug where he gives you a 4th copy of the Lucky Shot Amber instead of the Sleight of Hand Amber, and Sleight of Hand can't be found anywhere else in the game.
Finding the Scouts
To find the scouts, go up the lift near "The Climb" Lantern, then go through the cave. When you exit back out into the open cliffs, you will soon see another lift on your right hand side blocked by some webs. Shoot the 2 Red Orbs to destroy the webs and call the lift up.
Ride the lift down and jump off halfway onto the platform with a web, then burn the web with the Fire Transmutation to get into the cave.
The Scout Commander
Inside this cave you will find the Scout Commander, all that is left of the missing scouting party. Defeat him and the scouts' orders (a letter titled “Letter to all Commanding Officers of the Line Infantry”) can be found on the boxes behind him. Pick them up.
Returning to the Adjudant
Return to the adjudant at the tipped carriage near the "Demolished Path" Lantern and hand over the orders. He will ask what happened to the rest of his scouts, and you can either tell him the truth or lie.
It doesn't matter which you choose, you will get the Sleight of Hand Amber and the “Aggressive Reconnaissance” Trophy/Achievement for either option.
Quest Rewards
Completing “An Unheard Farewell” rewards you with:
- Sleight of Hand Amber (reduces the reload times for Firearms and speeds up weapon switching)
- “Aggressive Reconnaissance” Trophy/Achievement
Your answer only changes what happens to the adjudant afterwards.
