“The Deserter” is a side quest in the Vale of Wrath region of Valor Mortis. It follows Private Henri Dufour, an Eternal Guard who fled his post rather than share the fate of his comrades, and stole a valuable Egyptian artefact on his way out. Before he vanished, he broke it into three pieces and hid each one among the valley's beehives, trusting the bees to keep them safe.
To complete the quest you need to track down the deserter's hideout and find all 3 Anubis Figurine Parts. Doing so rewards you with the Bountiful Harvest Amber, 2,500 Catalysts and the “Hand in the Jar” Trophy/Achievement.
This guide walks you through every step, from the note that starts the quest to the location of the final figurine piece.
Starting the Quest
To start “The Deserter”, swing across from the "Under the Bridge" Lantern in the Vale of Wrath region and follow the main path until you reach a small wooden hut with a note on the floor.
Pick up the note, a Wanted Notice for Private Henri Dufour, to start the side quest.
The Beekeeper's Hut Key
Shortly after this there will be a split in the road where there are 2 dog-type enemies.
At this split take the right path, then use the Grappling Point to reach an Elite enemy standing among some Beehive Boxes. Defeat him to get the Beekeeper's Hut Key.
Use the key to open the door of the cabin next to him. Inside, pick up the Deserter's Diary. Dufour broke what he stole into three pieces and hid each one in a Beehive Box. You now need to find the 3 Anubis Figurine Parts.
Be careful which boxes you open, only three of them hold a figurine piece, and the others release a swarm of angry bees that damages you, you need to find the boxes that DON'T have an X mark on them.
Anubis Figurine Part #1
The first piece is inside the left-most Beehive Box in the arena where you fought the Elite enemy that dropped the key.
Anubis Figurine Part #2
The second piece can be found just before reaching the "Poisoned Camp" Lantern. Before the camp entrance, go down the small side path on the right to find more Beehive Boxes. The figurine piece is in the right-most box.
Anubis Figurine Part #3
The final piece is just after crossing the bridge. When you go through the gate where you need to use the Stasis Transmutation to hold it open, go into the first house you see on the right hand side. The Beehive Box is in the back garden.
Picking up the last piece puts the figurine back together and completes the quest.
Quest Rewards
Once you have all 3 pieces, they combine into the complete Anubis Figurine and “The Deserter” is completed, rewarding you with:
- Bountiful Harvest Amber (picking up Nephtoglobin Remnants restores Health)
- 2,500 Catalysts
- “Hand in the Jar” Trophy/Achievement
