Zelda Ocarina of Time Remake Walkthrough – Chapter 5: Kakariko Village & Graveyard

Chapter 5 · Child Link

Chapter 5 covers Kakariko Village and the Graveyard as child Link. You'll show Zelda's Letter to open the gate to Death Mountain, collect the Cuccos for your second Empty Bottle, get the Hylian Shield, and learn the Sun's Song in the Royal Family's Tomb.

There are also several Heart Pieces and night-time Gold Skulltulas in Kakariko that child Link can collect right away.

Arriving in Kakariko Village

From Hyrule Field, take the stairs on the east side of the field, north of Lon Lon Ranch, up to Kakariko Village.

Kakariko Village

The Cucco Lady and the Second Bottle

The woman standing by the Cucco pen near the village entrance is Anju, the Cucco Lady. Her Cuccos have escaped and she can't touch them herself. Return all 7 Cuccos to the pen and she gives you an Empty Bottle.

Pick up a Cucco and carry it back, or throw it into the pen with ZR. While you're holding one you can jump off a ledge to glide, which is how you reach the harder ones. Talk to Anju at any time to hear how many are left.

  • One wanders near the village entrance.
  • One is by the construction, very close to the pen.

  • One is on top of the bricks, shoot it with the slingshot to knock it down.
  • One is inside a fenced yard. Carry another Cucco up to the windmill stairs to jump the fence and glide over to it.

Cucco #4
  • One is in this same area after gliding over the fence, climb up a ladder to find it above (DON'T pick this one up yet, before you do check the Heart Piece entry below to use this Cucco to be able to reach a Heart Piece earlier than intended).
  • One is hidden inside a crate just to the left of the village entrance, roll into it to destroy it.
  • The last one, Anju says, flew up toward the Death Mountain Trail. It's near the stairs leading up to the gate.

Heart Piece, the Kakariko Rooftop

A Piece of Heart can be obtained by talking to the NPC on top of the roof of the center building in Kakariko Village, the standard way of reaching him is by using the hookshot later on, but there is a way to reach him on this visit to get the Heart Piece early.

When you climb up the ladder by the windmill (after using a Cucco to glide over the tall fence), pick up the Cucco at the top of the ladder and jump off the cliff towards the center roof while holding the Cucco to glide across onto the roof, here talk to the NPC to get the Heart Piece.

If you already got the Cucco from the top don't worry you can return here later when you have the hookshot.

Gold Skulltula #8

Roll into the tree near the entrance of Kakariko Village and a Gold Skulltula will fall out of the tree, defeat it and pick up the Token.

Gold Skulltula #9

For the next Gold Skulltula, exit back out of Kakariko Village through the same entrance you first entered from, and just down the stairs, on the right cut the grass and you will see some bugs appear, use an Empty Bottle to trap the Bugs.

Now go back into Kakariko Village and take the path straight ahead just to the right of the windmill to reach the Graveyard.

In the Graveyard go up the left stairs and you will see a Soft Soil Spot on your left, release the Bug by "using" the Bottle with the Bug in it to make the Gold Skulltula appear from the soil, defeat it and grab the Token.

The Royal Family's Tomb and the Sun's Song

At the top of the graveyard by the biggest tombstone stand on the Triforce symbol between the graves and play Zelda's Lullaby. Lightning destroys the big gravestone and reveals the entrance to the Royal Family's Tomb, and a new Threads of Time goal, A Song of the Royal Family.

Inside, shoot the 4 Keese with the Slingshot to open the barred doors, cross the room with the poison water, and avoid the ReDeads, which freeze you in place with their scream. At the end, read the stone tablet to learn the Sun's Song.

Playing the Sun's Song switches between day and night instantly, which makes night-time Gold Skulltulas much faster to collect. Leave through the door with the Royal crest and take the stairs back up to the graveyard.

Hylian Shield

In the graveyard you can get a free Hylian Shield by pulling back on one of the tombstones (if you are coming from the Royal Tomb, it is the 2nd Tombstone on the left) then drop down the hole hidden below.

Here you will see a chest behind another enemy, you can play the Sun's Song to paralyze the enemy if you wish to, then open the chest to get the Hylian Shield.

You can only pull back the Tombstones during the nighttime, if you try during the day the small kid will stop you.

Graveyard Heart Piece

You can pull back another of the Tombstones, the one at the left end of the same row (if we are facing towards the entrance) as the one we just went down for the Hylian Shield.

Drop down the hole below this tombstone to find a big chest, inside this chest is a Heart Piece.

Dampé's Gravedigging Tour Heart Piece

During the night, Dampé offers a gravedigging tour for 10 Rupees. Point him at one of the dirt spots and he digs it up. Prizes are random, and one of them is a Piece of Heart. Keep paying until it turns up. Once you've won it, it won't appear again.

If you run out of Rupees, just load the autosave from just before you started the minigame and try again.

Kakariko Night Gold Skulltulas

Gold Skulltula #10

Four of Kakariko's six Gold Skulltulas appear at night for child Link. If it's daytime, play the Sun's Song to wait until nighttime.

  • Guard house, on the wall of the building near the Death Mountain gate guard.
Gold Skulltula #11
  • Half way up the ladder of the watchtower, shoot it with the slingshot then climb up the ladder to pick up the Token.

Another Gold Skulltula can be found at night in Kakariko Village near the Cucco pen, on the back of the construction bricks.

Gold Skulltula #13

The final Gold Skulltula you can get during this visit is going to be on the wall of The House of Skulltula itself, this is the building near the well.

The House of Skulltula

Step inside the House of Skulltula, the building near the village entrance. Inside is the Cursed Rich Man, turned into a Skulltula by the curse of the Gold Skulltulas. Collecting tokens breaks the curse, and he rewards you at certain token counts.

He also gives hints on where to look. He says Gold Skulltulas like to climb high, that outdoor ones only appear at night, that some hide under fresh soil and can be lured out by releasing a bug from a bottle, and that one is in a tree in the village square.

At this point you should have around 13 tokens if you've collected every one so far. So you should get the Adult's Wallet reward for having found at least 10, this will increase the max amount of Rupees you can carry.

Go to the top of the village and talk to the guard at the gate leading to Death Mountain Trail. Show him Zelda's Letter and he agrees to let you through. He also warns that falling rocks on the mountain call for something sturdier than a wooden shield, and offers to set up a discount for you at the Bazaar in Castle Town.

He then asks a favor. The Happy Mask Shop has just opened in Castle Town, and his son wants one of its masks. You'll take care of this Side Quest in Chapter 11.

Collectibles For Later

There are also two more Heart Pieces (one behind Impa's House & one in the Graveyard) as well as another 2 Gold Skulltulas (one in the Graveyard that requires the Boomerang and one more in the village that requires the hookshot) that we can't get on this visit and we will be returning for in later chapters so don't worry about them for now.

Chapter 5 Checklist

  • Bottle (3 of 5)
  • Hylian Shield
  • Sun's Song
  • Heart Pieces this chapter, 3, (running total 4 of 36)
