Chapter 1 of this Ocarina of Time walkthrough covers the opening in Kokiri Forest. Before Mido lets you through to the Great Deku Tree, you need to find the Kokiri Sword and buy a Deku Shield from the Kokiri Shop.
This chapter shows where the sword is hidden, the fastest ways to collect the 40 Rupees for the shield, and what to pick up around the village before you leave.
Waking Up in Link's House
The game opens with the fairy Navi being sent to wake you up. Once you have control, leave Link's treehouse and climb down the ladder. Saria is waiting at the bottom. She's delighted you finally have a fairy and tells you to hurry to the Great Deku Tree.
The path to the Great Deku Tree is on the north side of the village, but Mido stops you as soon as you walk into the passage. He won't let you through without a sword and a shield, so those are your first two goals. You can get them in either order.
- Link can now jump with the X button, which you'll use to hop across the stepping stones in the village.
- The game autosaves often, so you'll see a Saving icon in the corner.
Finding the Kokiri Sword
The Kokiri Sword is hidden in the Forest Training Center, the open area with the straw practice dummies where a few Kokiri are training, on the south-west side of the village. At the back of it, next to the sign, is a small crawl hole in the stone wall. Crawl through it.
Follow the path on the other side and climb the ladder up the stone wall. At the top, follow the ledge and hop across the small gap to reach the chest holding the Kokiri Sword. This is a change from the original, where the chest sat at the end of the boulder maze.
After you grab the sword, head back through the maze below. A rolling boulder patrols it, so step into the side alcoves as it comes past, and pick up the Blue Rupee (5 Rupees each) on your way back to the crawl hole.
Collecting 40 Rupees
The Deku Shield costs 40 Rupees at the Kokiri Shop.
- The Rupees on the stepping stones in the stream. Jump between the stones with X.
- The Rupee on top of the raised platform at the top of the wooden steps.
- Lifting rocks and cutting bushes around the village, which often hide Rupees.
- The four chests inside Mido's House, which hold three Blue Rupees and a Green Rupee (16 Rupees).
- The Blue Rupees in the boulder maze on the way back from the Kokiri Sword.
Buying the Deku Shield
Once you have 40 Rupees, go into the Kokiri Shop and buy the Deku Shield. The shop is low on stock in the Remake, so the only other things for sale are Deku Nuts, which stun enemies, and Deku Sticks.
After you buy the shield, a Kokiri in the shop shows you how to use it on a practice dummy. Hold ZL to raise the shield, which you'll need in the Great Deku Tree to send Deku Nuts back at Deku Scrubs.
Getting Past Mido
With the Kokiri Sword and Deku Shield, walk back into the passage. Mido stops you, he can't believe you have both, and reluctantly steps aside.
The path to the Great Deku Tree has a few Deku Babas, the snapping plants. Defeat them for Deku Sticks and Deku Nuts. The tall ones that stand up straight drop a Deku Stick when you hit them while they're upright. Swing a Deku Stick with ZR.
Talk to the Great Deku Tree at the end of the path. After the cutscene, he parts his mustache and you can walk inside.
There are 3 Gold Skulltulas in Kokiri Forest, but none of them can be collected yet (we will mention these later on in this walkthrough when we can actually get them).
- Soft soil patch beside the Kokiri Shop, needs Bugs from a Bottle.
- Back wall of the Know-It-All Brothers' House, child Link at night.
- House of Twins, adult Link at night with the Hookshot.
