In Chapter 8 we will be covering our 1st visit to the Death Mountain Summit to meet the first Great Fairy, a quick visit into the Death Mountain Crater and then heading through Zora River.
This chapter also picks up 5 Heart Pieces and 5 Gold Skulltulas.
Climbing Death Mountain
As soon as you exit Dodongo Cavern, head back down the ramp towards Kakariko Village as you can now destroy the cracked wall on the left with the bombs to reveal a Gold Skulltula.
Before heading all the way to the top of Death Mountain, stop by in Goron City to find another Gold Skulltula now that you have the bombs. On the top floor of Goron City there is a room (just behind the 2 breakable boulders blocking the path) that is filled with many breakable boulders, use bombs to clear a path to find a Gold Skulltula hidden inside the crate at the end of the room next to 2 small chests.
Climb Death Mountain Trail past Goron City to the summit. Watch for falling rocks on the upper trail. At the top, bomb the cracked wall near the summit to reveal the entrance to a Great Fairy Fountain.
Stand on the Triforce symbol and play Zelda's Lullaby. The Great Fairy gives you a Magic Meter and the Din's Fire magic.
In the remake she asks for an offering first. Choose Make an offering and give her 25 Rupees. She calls herself the Great Fairy of Magic, and tells you to seek out her 5 remaining sisters.
Before speaking to Kaepora Gaebora, head inside Death Mountain Crater.
Death Mountain Crater
Inside Death Mountain Crater as a kid you won't have any burn resistance so you will be losing health quite fast. So make sure to grab everything you need here as fast as you can.
As soon as you enter you will see 2 crates on your left hand side, destroy the furthest one to reveal another Gold Skulltula.
Death Mountain Crater Heart Pieces
1st Heart Piece
Almost directly in front of you towards the cliff, if you look down you will see a small platform below that has a Heart Piece on it, drop down to it and pick it up. Picking up Heart Pieces also refills your current health, this will give you enough time to climb back up the cliff towards the 2nd Heart Piece.
2nd Heart Piece
After climbing back up the cliff inside the Death Mountain Crater, quickly run towards the right to find a Deku enemy that shoots at you, use the shield to bounce the bullets back at it so that it surrenders.
If you speak to it it will offer to sell you another Heart Piece for 100 Rupees (this can only be done while Link is a kid).
Heading To Zora River
3rd Heart Piece
Exit back outside the Death Mountain Crater, talk to Kaepora Gaebora near the entrance and he'll carry you back down to Kakariko Village.
He will drop you on the roof of Impa's House, from here you can jump down onto the smaller roof below by the cow to get another Heart Piece.
If you drop down without getting the Heart Piece don't worry, you can get back onto this roof once you get the Hookshot later on.
Exit Kakariko Village back into Hyrule Field, Zora River is to the south-east of the Kakariko Village exit. Follow the stream up to the cave and go through to the river.
Kaepora Gaebora is perched on a stone pillar just inside. He tells you to head upstream, and that the Zora have shared a deep bond with the Royal Family since ancient times, so anyone connected to the Royal Family is welcome at their gate.
Just past the owl, two big cracked boulders block the path. Set a Bomb next to them to blow them up.
Magic Beans
A little further up, the Bean Seller sits by the path. He says his beans aren't selling well, so he'll let you have some for 10 Rupees.
Plant a bean in a soft soil patch as child Link. There's one right next to him. When you come back as adult Link, it has grown into a moving plant that carries you to places you couldn't otherwise reach. Several Heart Pieces and Gold Skulltulas need these plants, so buy as many as you can afford now and come back for the rest once you have a bigger wallet.
There are 10 soft soil patches. Plant a bean in each one as child Link, then ride them as adult Link. Release Bugs on the soil first, since each patch also hides a Gold Skulltula.
- Kokiri Forest, beside the Kokiri Shop
- Lost Woods (from entrance: left, left)
- Lost Woods (from entrance: right, left, right, left , left)
- Kakariko Graveyard
- Death Mountain Trail, near Dodongo's Cavern
- Death Mountain Crater, near the Fire Temple warp point
- Zora River, near the Bean Salesman
- Lake Hylia, next to the Lakeside Laboratory
- Gerudo Valley, by the stream below the bridge
- Desert Colossus, near the Spirit Temple
Just past the boulders inside Zora River near the Magic Bean vendor is a Soft Soil Spot, use a Bottled Bug here to reveal a Gold Skulltula.
Heart Pieces, the River Pillar and Waterfall Ledge
There are 2 Heart Pieces on Zora River that child Link reaches with a Cucco. The Cucco wanders near the metal lattice gate along the lower river.
- River pillar Heart Piece. Carry the Cucco up the river path and throw it up the ledge at the next big step, then pick it up again once you climb up to glide across to the platform on your right. Climb the vines to get to the upper area, here find a hole to your left that you can drop down to find another Cucco, pick it up and go back to the surface, now use the Cucco to glide across to the Heart piece on your left.
- Waterfall Ledge Heart Piece. Make sure that when you reach the platform for the previous Heart Piece that you throw the Cucco back down in the direction of the main path so that you can pick it up again for this next Heart Piece.
Do the same again, throw it up the big step and pick it up again at the top, this time bring it with you into the next area towards the entrance to Zora Domain. when you reach the thin ramps you will see the Heart Piece on a platform to your left, use the Cucco to glide over to it.
In this final area of the Zora River with the thin ramps, there is a Gold Skulltula that appears at NIGHT (play the Sun's Song to change the time if needed) in the lower part, just behind the rock that has the vines that you can use to climb back up.
The Frogs
Just below where we got the 1st Heart Piece here in the river, there is a group of Frogs. Each song you play to them gives you a Purple Rupee. If you want, you can play them Zelda's Lullaby, Epona's Song, Saria's Song and the Sun's Song for now, but we will need to return here later to complete this minigame when we have learnt more songs.
Two Heart Pieces from the Frogs need the Song of Storms and the Song of Time, which you learn later. They're covered in later Chapters and we will mention during the walkthrough when you need to return here so don't worry for now.
Head Into Zora Domain
Now all that is left to do is go to the end of the path and play Zelda's Lullaby in front of the Triforce Stone to open the entrance to Zora Domain.
